Episode 18: Desert Island Knits with Charmaine Wombwell of YarnTings

00:00:00:01 - 00:00:20:16

Michelle

Hello lovelies. Welcome to episode 18 of the Get Knit Done podcast with me, Michelle Gregory. Welcome to this very exciting episode of the podcast. It is our next installment of Desert Island Knits, and I'm so pleased to be here with Charmaine of Yarn Tings. So I'm going to swap over to my conversation with Charmaine, which we had earlier this week, and we're going to get going.

00:00:20:16 - 00:00:22:14

Michelle

Hello lovely. Welcome to the podcast.

00:00:22:24 - 00:00:24:10

Charmaine

Thank you for having me.

00:00:24:13 - 00:00:30:06

Michelle

I'm so thrilled my dear. For people who don't know who you are and are missing out Tell me who you are.

00:00:30:18 - 00:00:59:12

Charmaine

And so I am an artist and theater maker and yarn Dyer and I live on a boat in West London, West London, with my husband and my kid and I dye yarn in the garden and fiber. I am also a massive, massive fan of spinning, I spin thin yarns, fat yarns, art yarns and yeah, huge huge color fan.

00:00:59:22 - 00:01:05:22

Michelle

And how did you how did you. Because you you've only been dying. You've only been knitting and spinning. Not that long.

00:01:06:11 - 00:01:39:09

Charmaine

No, so I've been knitting since 2017. So what's that? Five years? Yeah, five years. So it's actually is quite it's. Yes, this is a chunk of time, a while, and. Yeah, so I, I started knitting when I was pregnant and I was very, very anxious about pregnancy. I've got OCD obsessive-compulsive disorder and it sort of rocketed when I was pregnant and I had this very overriding strong feeling that I needed to learn how to knit.

00:01:40:01 - 00:02:01:16

Charmaine

So another friend of mine who also lives on a boat taught me how to knit, and I just got obsessed with this idea of, like, if I if I can't do anything for this else, for this baby, I can keep it warm. And so my friend taught me how to knit, and I found I'd bought ages ago some Rowan Tweed.

00:02:01:24 - 00:02:16:04

Charmaine

am from John Lewis, you know, just that sort of magpie thing of going oh these colors and I picked up these balls of wool. If this was years before, I just had seen them, I was like, these will be useful for something. One day,

00:02:16:17 - 00:02:17:02

Charmaine

And then.

00:02:17:20 - 00:02:43:14

Charmaine

So look at that. I was a yarn hoarder before I even had a use for it. And my friend Laura taught me how to knit, and I knitted loads of little squares and I made him a blanket, and that was it. That sort of started me. I found it super calming. And then not long after my son was born, my sister found out she was pregnant and I was like, Yay, another blanket.

00:02:44:07 - 00:02:49:08

Charmaine

And I knitted Yeah, And that's how it started the knitting, the knitting thing.

00:02:50:04 - 00:03:06:03

Michelle

And then I think you've been an artist for I guess, well, artists are kind of I think they're born so obviously. But did you see like so obviously it was the dying and the spinning just a next like logical or was it just a slippery slope.

00:03:07:01 - 00:03:26:24

Charmaine

So I, I get very bored with things. And the thing that got me, kept me going with the blanket was that I was doing different colored squares. So I had four colors and I was doing knitting little tiny squares. So I didn't have to knit one thing for very long. And then I don't know how it happened.

00:03:26:24 - 00:03:49:10

Charmaine

I think I was on Etsy or something, and I didn't even know it was a thing, but I happened upon hand-dyed yarn and I was like, What is this And I can't remember. I can't even remember which dyer it was, but the colors were just stunning. And I was like, I have to have it and then I'm knitting something.

00:03:49:10 - 00:04:17:16

Charmaine

in that the constant color changing is what meant that I could knit something bigger than tiny squares it could keep my interest because I was sort of stimulated by seeing how the patterns and pooling emerged. And, and, and that coupled with so, yeah, I'm a theater maker, and my, my main training is in theater. And I would say then sort of closely followed by music and art.

00:04:18:11 - 00:04:50:22

Charmaine

And I pre-baby I made a show about my failed relationships and I've got I have a clown alter ego and I, sorry that's a boat going past this. I don't know if you can hear it. And so, yeah, I'm on the London Canal System and we do get the odd boat going past and, and so I may and so my plan was I'm, I've had a baby now my next show is going to be knitted.

00:04:51:07 - 00:05:14:22

Charmaine

I was just like, I want to knit it. I want to knit my costumes and I wanted to create my and it's still a plan. It's just a very long term plan. My first show was really small, like one person. I generally performed it in a dungeon in Edinburgh, you know, like the learking, If it rained, they had to swap a bucket every 5 minutes to stop my venue, flooding, that sort of thing.

00:05:15:06 - 00:05:51:04

Charmaine

Whereas this time I was like, I'm going to build an epic landscape out of yarn and wool and fluff and painting. So painting was another thing during my training that I really got into. I have a really strong relationship with color and particularly with like acrylic paints and oil paints with texture. And what was very exciting about finding handdyed yarn was that it was an extension of that relationship with color and texture, but with something you're meant to touch.

00:05:51:04 - 00:06:20:15

Charmaine

You know, I feel like we we have a relationship in this side of the world with art where you just look at it, you don't touch it. And like my paintings particularly, like whenever I look at my paintings, I I want to touch them. Like, I love the sort of, I like plain really thick paint and texture. And so what's great about yarn and fiber in particular, and spinning is that I get to have all three things of like, I mean, is it three things?

00:06:20:22 - 00:06:43:07

Charmaine

Yeah. You know it. Yeah, the smell as well, you know, because I love the smell of paint like I've been in oil paints at the moment and I walk into my shed and I'm like, Oh my God, it's smell of like wood of my shed and the smell of the oil paints and the colors. And so with yarn you've got a similar thing, particularly with like, like silk has a very particular smell.

00:06:43:08 - 00:07:12:04

Charmaine

Yes. And obviously very light very if you get really sheepy wool and as a fiber dyer as well, like I in the pandemic, you know, in the first two first few lockdowns or however many there were, as a performer, I it, you know, my work just stopped and I'm not great with technology. So the idea of moving all of my stuff online didn't feel quite right.

00:07:12:17 - 00:07:13:18

Charmaine

And so yeah, just.

00:07:13:18 - 00:07:14:01

Michelle

got.

00:07:14:10 - 00:07:37:06

Charmaine

Into like a fiber web how my poor mum, we were living with my mum at one point and in her small flat in London and she'd like she turn around be like what's that smell. Just just me unraveling an entire sheep fleece I had bought off a farmer on Facebook marketplace and you're like What is that? It's I've got plans, mother.

00:07:37:08 - 00:07:38:04

Charmaine

I've got plans.

00:07:39:21 - 00:07:43:02

Michelle

They don't always arrive without certain bit on them like

00:07:43:08 - 00:08:00:06

Charmaine

Yeah. I mean there was a lot of poo, I might have blocked the drain trying to clean that thing. I mean but then we moved back onto the bay. I had an outside workspace and. Yeah, so it's just spiralled.

00:08:00:12 - 00:08:18:20

Michelle

Oh, amazing. Yeah. Because you do dye beautiful, vibrant things. And I never made that association between color and touching it. But you're right, cause, like, I the kind of I've set off alarms in museums just by mistake. You when you reach out, you're like, oh, wait, I've just crossed a sensor. I never, I never thought. Yeah, it's. You could kind of.

00:08:19:02 - 00:08:24:19

Michelle

I like that. That's awesome. Now, my dear, you are here for the questions, though, as well. Yes, I know.

00:08:24:19 - 00:08:27:01

Charmaine

So I like I like to rabbit on.

00:08:27:03 - 00:08:31:17

Michelle

No, no, I do. I want to share that. Look, I don't know if anyone's really here for the questions except me anyway. I'm just.

00:08:31:17 - 00:08:31:23

Michelle

Like.

00:08:32:21 - 00:08:37:03

Michelle

This is the question. Really hard. They are. Oh, I know, and I know.

00:08:37:07 - 00:08:38:22

Charmaine

But I

00:08:38:22 - 00:08:52:05

Charmaine

had to write down my answers to make sure I stayed true to what I felt and didn't get distracted in the moment and say something random that I'd regret I took it back pretty seriously Michelle

00:08:52:15 - 00:08:53:05

Michelle

I'm.

00:08:53:22 - 00:08:56:06

Michelle

Yeah, just. Yes.

00:08:56:06 - 00:09:16:05

Michelle

No, I'm joking. I like it. I just. I like a bit of a format because not everybody knows what to do with they come on a podcast, but we could like it, you know, it's kind of free form anyway for anyone who is tuning in for the first time. It is Desert Island Knits, this is our second episode, which is why we have some questions I going to start and just see because I, I think I know your answer to question one.

00:09:16:05 - 00:09:23:11

Michelle

I think probably be fair. So we're going to start with that which I think should be pretty easy. Your favorite, your desert island one yarn base.

00:09:24:05 - 00:09:57:04

Charmaine

It would be camel silk four ply. It's, it's mad luxurious like it's not it's not for knitting socks for your grandkids I don't think. No, but I love everything about it. I love how it feels. It's so soft and the color it's undyed color is just glorious. It's like a beautiful soft gold and it's it takes color to dye on it's just to dye on.

00:09:57:04 - 00:10:16:04

Charmaine

It's just a dream. And like it is one of those yarns that really changes once it's dried. There are times I've gone, oh, no, oh, no. God, I've wasted like four skeins it's not that it dries. I'm like, oh, no, OK, it is just glowing. It's beautiful and it's amazing. It feels so nice to knit with as well.

00:10:16:23 - 00:10:35:15

Michelle

Yeah, because I have a skein of yours in your beautiful greens and blue. I cannot bring myself to use this because it's so beautiful. I don't want to waste it, it's so perfect and so beautiful that I can't knit with it because it's. I think that's just how it is. I think. I think your yarn is there to be collected as well, to be fair, as opposed to just knit

00:10:36:16 - 00:10:49:05

Charmaine

You know, it's one of the plus sides of being a dyer. I'm buying it wholesale and I don't feel as guilty knitting with it because it, it hasn't cost me quite as much.

00:10:49:16 - 00:11:08:00

Michelle

Yeah, but it's worth I have like even it like full. It's so worth it. But it's I just I can't I'm not ready yet. I still haven't found it. It's like it's looking for the, like, pinnacle project to put it in. I can't, I can't commit to it so I'm not surprised that that is your favorite base because it's beautiful.

00:11:08:01 - 00:11:12:11

Michelle

Now, the next one is one yarn brand apart from your own.

00:11:13:02 - 00:11:52:22

Charmaine

So this was another one. I took very very seriously because my hand dyed yarn journey has been has been intense. It hasn't been very long. It started in 2020 with the pandemic so only two years. However in that two years I, I have spent a lot of money on it and you know, there's all these different dyers that took me through this journey and I was, so I was looking on their websites today because I thought, you know, well let's have a look on their sites and see like and it ended up being so I thought about there's also like the yarn dyers who I have a, I somehow have built a personal rapport with

00:11:52:23 - 00:12:10:20

Charmaine

like over Instagram say like what Mustard made Tracey Mustard is like she's a neon queen and I love I love her stuff. But also like we just have long Instagram chats and like every couple of months we send each other huge emails about our lives and we've never met in person.

00:12:10:20 - 00:12:20:01

Michelle

I love that. That's I love I love that about it because you could just be you meet people and I make like little air quotes of some like that you've never met. I love that.

00:12:20:01 - 00:12:37:20

Charmaine

Yeah. Yeah. And Crafty Cat Knitty Bits with her cat Tom. So she helped me on my spinning journey provider of fiber and the discreet unicorn, Witch Crafty lady.

00:12:38:03 - 00:12:39:21

Michelle

Oh yeah. I love Almas.

00:12:39:21 - 00:12:58:20

Charmaine

She so awesome, yeah, Almas like say all of these people have helped me on my spinning and yarn journey, but I did manage to and then there's Lisa from for the love of yarn whose yarns I just like I think I think I probably think of her yarns like you. You think of mine I want to stare at them and hold them

00:13:00:01 - 00:13:07:11

Michelle

She does I was on her website checking something for her yesterday like just like a technical thing. And I was sitting there going, I need to stop looking at this.

00:13:07:22 - 00:13:24:11

Charmaine

Yeah, yeah. I got three skeins of hers under my bed, so I don't know if they'll just maybe I'll frame them. And then so I settled on third vault yarns. Oh, yes, Lola About yarns. I realized I have quite a lot of.

00:13:24:20 - 00:13:25:08

Speaker 3

her yarn

00:13:26:01 - 00:13:53:24

Charmaine

Again in my stash, but I just. Yeah, I think also I really connect with the nerdiness of it, her passion for myth and folklore. I feel very, I feel very close to that like I love myth and legend and all of that stuff and yeah, her colors. I just looked, I looked on her and I says like all of them I'd buy all of them.

00:13:54:18 - 00:13:58:23

Michelle

She does beautiful things. But she also does bases like heavier weight bases as well.

00:13:58:23 - 00:13:59:07

Charmaine

Yeah.

00:13:59:10 - 00:14:14:15

Michelle

Which not everybody dyes. And I think that's really one of the things that, you know, that I really like about her stuff as well. Plus, she has like, I love her a bit like you. I like her board game knits books, her patterns. I like that she has like everything is there's a story. Everything is kind of yes.

00:14:15:05 - 00:14:34:09

Charmaine

There's a specific interest and framing of things which I really like. And yeah, I like the variety of bases and actually she's again, she's advised me on like suppliers and things. So she she's been super helpful. But I just think her yarns are so beautiful.

00:14:34:09 - 00:14:47:23

Michelle

So it's hard to narrow down cause I would struggle. I do that to people. I don't do it myself. Funny. So Needle and hook brand, this is less is less about like this less emotion in this one, I think.

00:14:48:11 - 00:15:12:09

Charmaine

Yeah, definitely. YMmy I mean, my answer know my, my answer. I think mine is a bit stupid because like there's still the brand I've put down as one that I've never used because I can't afford it. (Michelle) Who is it? They look amazing. And without wanting to, like, slag them off, like I have Knitpro I have a knit pro interchangeable set

00:15:12:12 - 00:15:18:05

Charmaine

However, always they unscrew and like they're fine.

00:15:18:11 - 00:15:20:01

Michelle

They're like the Tesco of needles.

00:15:20:17 - 00:15:20:23

Charmaine

Yeah

00:15:20:23 - 00:15:30:06

Michelle

You know, if you break one, you get another one. They're there, they're not a treat. Well, yeah, they're, they're a good workhorse. Yeah, exactly. But they they're.

00:15:30:06 - 00:15:32:04

Charmaine

Not they cause me frustration.

00:15:32:06 - 00:15:32:13

Michelle

Yeah.

00:15:33:06 - 00:15:37:24

Michelle

Like Tesco. But Oh, I shoudl take that out, but they're.

00:15:39:00 - 00:15:40:02

Charmaine

Like Sainsbury's.

00:15:40:22 - 00:15:41:10

Michelle

Are they Sainsbury's though?

00:15:41:10 - 00:15:44:24

Michelle

(muttering)

00:15:44:24 - 00:15:46:03

Speaker 3

So Yeah.

00:15:46:06 - 00:15:56:21

Charmaine

I've looked at and yearned for and so I might ask for like family members to club together to get me for Christmas is the Lykke needle set

00:15:57:03 - 00:15:58:21

Michelle

Oh really interesting.

00:15:58:21 - 00:16:05:02

Charmaine

Yeah I've heard I've heard good things about them. They are very beautiful but have you heard bad things.

00:16:05:08 - 00:16:19:03

Michelle

No they're beautiful. I like their I like their small size DPNs. You to be careful though because they are they're more brittle. Well I have the whole which was so I have it depends it but it depends the wood and everything but.

00:16:19:03 - 00:16:21:09

Charmaine

If I was going to go for the copper ones.

00:16:21:10 - 00:16:24:23

Michelle

Oh they're very, yeah, yeah they're very nice

00:16:25:05 - 00:16:30:06

Charmaine

I see that's that's the thing. Yeah. This is what I mean about family clubbing together to get my a Christmas present

00:16:32:07 - 00:16:43:15

Charmaine

It's like if I could have any needles and knowing that over time they'll like, discolor and look all like a beautiful piece of, like, copper at

00:16:45:00 - 00:16:46:02

Michelle

Yes, I can see that

00:16:46:02 - 00:16:51:24

Charmaine

They're good for me. Well, I know this isn't the aim of the game, but what would yours be?

00:16:52:18 - 00:17:12:18

Michelle

Me? I, you know, I'm not. I'm actually, I am not that fussed about needles, in a way, I like a nice, sharp point, and I like a wooden needle generally they're not as slippery because I'm a I find slip. If I'm knitting with a four ply yarn, it's too slippery. I like to take my time with knitting.

00:17:12:18 - 00:17:33:02

Michelle

So a wooden needle suits me better. But then having said that, an Addi sock wonder is my happiness that this really I for socks obviously Chaio Goo for things like lace because they're not as slippery as as Addi lace. A nice non slippery needle with a sharp point. And I don't really mind what brand it's from.

00:17:33:24 - 00:17:41:13

Charmaine

Right? See, I don't like a sharp point because I have a tendency to use less. So now that I know that you have taught me well.

00:17:41:19 - 00:17:42:09

Speaker 3

not you.

00:17:42:09 - 00:18:02:12

Charmaine

Personally I have been taught in Knit School continental knitting. Yes. Anniken, before, yes Anniken,, before I would as I would get a sore finger from a very pointy needle I do still use English knitting style

00:18:02:12 - 00:18:16:21

Michelle

Yeah and if you do because I would, but then I suppose. Yeah, because I used to do that with the Hiya Hiya sharps and that would result in you getting like a hole in your finger. They are too sharp for that. You're like, I have, I have wounded myself knitting, which so I don't use, I don't like them that sharp.

00:18:18:05 - 00:18:35:11

Michelle

It's interesting about the Lykke ones. I haven't tried their metal ones. Their wooden ones. I have a few pairs of because I wanted to try them. I like their DPNs. They're a little bit more brittle than bamboo, I would say, but their metals I haven't tried. I find them round tipped, but that's again, a preference, you know, that's.

00:18:36:09 - 00:18:42:12

Charmaine

I'm yet to try lace knitting. I mean, I don't know if I have the patience for it.

00:18:43:00 - 00:18:46:05

Michelle

I have the patience for lace 4ply but not lace lace

00:18:46:12 - 00:18:47:08

Charmaine

Right? Yeah.

00:18:48:05 - 00:18:51:19

Michelle

You can also do lovely lace in dk as well. Like, I wouldn't.

00:18:51:21 - 00:19:07:19

Charmaine

That's true. That's true. Yeah. No, that's yes. I think it was because early on in exploring hand dyers and stuff, somebody was singing lykke praises. And so, I don't know, I'm clearly easily swayed.

00:19:08:06 - 00:19:11:02

Michelle

And now I need to look at those in case I need someone to club together to give.

00:19:11:02 - 00:19:11:07

Michelle

Me a set

00:19:13:02 - 00:19:16:11

Charmaine

But yeah, I look at the copper ones just look absolutely stunning.

00:19:16:15 - 00:19:25:13

Michelle

Oh, now, I'm in trouble. Right? I'm holding you responsible. Anyone listening to the podcast who's now looking those up? It's, you know, I blame you too.

00:19:26:02 - 00:19:27:24

Charmaine

Really expensive.

00:19:28:09 - 00:19:51:23

Michelle

I imagine but I suppose they are one of those lifetime commitments though as well. I think that's why I like the Knit pros, because I'm always like, I, I never have enough. 3.5 or 4s.. So you buy them like sweets. I don't think I could afford like 600 pairs of four metal needles, but then you'd have your, like, your sort of china set

00:19:52:07 - 00:20:07:11

Charmaine

Yeah, well, the thing is you then you'd use the Knit pro. Yeah. For when you're knitting a shawl that's going to take you a few weeks and then you use the Lykke needles for when you're going to be doing like a fair isle dress or something. You're going to be

00:20:07:24 - 00:20:08:04

Michelle

heirloom

00:20:08:20 - 00:20:09:02

Charmaine

using forever

00:20:10:05 - 00:20:24:01

Charmaine

I mean, considering the amount of heirloom, in quotation mark knits, that I do is it some my family are going to be, well, lucky when I die because I spend far too much money on yarns and things.

00:20:24:08 - 00:20:30:15

Michelle

but if it makes you happy. Now after needles, we have your one designer.

00:20:31:19 - 00:20:38:12

Charmaine

So now this was a this was a tricky one. The designer I have knitted the most of is West Knits

00:20:38:12 - 00:20:41:21

Michelle

It's OK. Yep. I don't think you're alone.

00:20:42:13 - 00:20:43:02

Charmaine

Yes.

00:20:43:08 - 00:21:10:09

Charmaine

Well, because of the knits alongs and, you know, the fun involved yeah. Oh, my gosh, it's pouring rain. However, however, however he doesn't do very many, like, garments, so, like, you know, you get your jumpers and your sweaters, but, like, I love, I love a t shirt. Yes, I know what you mean. I love a vest. I've been knitting.

00:21:10:09 - 00:21:23:19

Charmaine

I've been knitting a couple of camisoles, and that's really satisfying having a nice small knit. So but west knits it's it's just generally so much. Again, it's the texture thing, right?

00:21:24:03 - 00:21:24:09

Michelle

Yep, absolutely

00:21:24:17 - 00:21:58:06

Charmaine

So much playing with texture and I feel like I learn a lot of techniques that I can I've into other things and he's and he's fun. He's videos are fun, and I feel like he's good at like encouraging people to go out of their comfort zone. And, and also I think the enjoyment with color. I think I've one thing I've noticed is that when I look at a lot of patterns, often they are and it makes sense.

00:21:58:06 - 00:22:03:11

Charmaine

Often they're chosen in quite like sort of one I don't know in a but a word of thanks of mainstream color palettes.

00:22:03:11 - 00:22:03:23

Michelle

Neutral, very neutral

00:22:04:00 - 00:22:25:22

Charmaine

Neutral. Yeah. And like absolutely for me being a very visual person I look at that going, oh, can I and obviously you can knit that in whatever colour you want. But what I like about Westknits it's is that you get to see this variety by oh, wow. That's what it would look like if you use these neons these and these and like that I find really inspiring.

00:22:26:24 - 00:22:35:09

Charmaine

You know, the thing about representation it's like seeing ooh the clothes that I enjoy, the colors I enjoy wear. Yeah. Represented.

00:22:36:07 - 00:22:53:21

Michelle

Yeah. Because you're right. Because if you look at, I was looking at Ravelry today to see I always look kind of nosy and it is it is that lovely. It's that kind of what will we call it, It is that flat Nordic filter I think is what I think of it is and it's funny because I'm redoing my pattern pictures at the moment and I'm going for that.

00:22:53:21 - 00:23:14:07

Michelle

That's the look. I'm going for it. I'm like, maybe I should stop doing that because I'm not like I'm chaotic so none of mine are ever the color that's flat. But it's why it's funny. It's that dynamic between what sells and what people are actually interested in. But then West Knits sells because it's you, right too. But the learning loads of things in it as well because like I never knit something from him that I'm like.

00:23:14:16 - 00:23:15:13

Michelle

Oh.

00:23:16:23 - 00:23:23:15

Michelle

Now next up, Notions brand.

00:23:23:15 - 00:23:48:07

Charmaine

So I don't have very many notiony type things no, I did. Now what did I look up? What did I look up? So there's oh no, that was it. So I don't have I have the odd knit bag, like knitting bag from various places. But I do love that was it hand and hammer.

00:23:48:19 - 00:23:49:17

Michelle

Oh hide and hammer.

00:23:49:20 - 00:24:09:09

Charmaine

Hi. Yes. I mean, I've never, I've never bought any of those and I mean it would be it would be nice, but I don't think I could ever I'm so bad at looking after my knitting. I feel like having something like that would, I would it be using it as it should be you know, I'd get it and then it would end up under my sofa

00:24:10:06 - 00:24:13:08

Charmaine

So I have this thing in the naughty corner.

00:24:14:01 - 00:24:23:16

Michelle

I use mine as a handbag because as in I use it as a pursre as well because I a bit like that you invest in it and I use it around the place, but then I'm untidy too

00:24:24:05 - 00:24:34:18

Charmaine

But the stuff that I've seen that I sort of lust after that again, I haven't ordered because they're not it's not necessary and it's Birdie Parker Knits

00:24:35:08 - 00:24:38:09

Michelle

Oh, I'm in trouble now am I?

00:24:38:12 - 00:25:02:12

Charmaine

Well, they do these earrings, and like shawl cuffs and it's metal, but like you can either buy like so it's metal that's engraved with like a knit pattern or a crochet like the pattern of crochet. So you can like, it's like you're wearing stockings stitch but on your ears and metal and it's like just I think, yeah, it's birdie park knits

00:25:02:12 - 00:25:08:01

Charmaine

Let me just double check on my Instagram. And I found.

00:25:09:06 - 00:25:18:06

Michelle

Writing that down right now. I'm like, I must see this for anyone who's listening and wondering, I will be linking to all of these in the show notes.

00:25:19:02 - 00:25:23:10

Charmaine

I found I found them through Lola Bean Yarn Company.

00:25:24:20 - 00:25:37:08

Michelle

I follow Lola. Actually I found funny that you would mention her. I found I was at home at Christmas and I found I was in my mother's stash and I found quite a lot of her yarn. And I was like.

00:25:37:08 - 00:25:39:12

Speaker 3

where I was like, where, are you.

00:25:39:12 - 00:25:42:14

Michelle

Buying this from? And she's like, Mind your own business.

00:25:44:17 - 00:26:01:08

Michelle

It's really nice because I had it's not because I don't I don't order a lot of yarn. And also, she's based I think in the US, she's in the US isn't she? You could buy her yarn from Stephen and Penelope, but I don't I haven't been there or I don't buy a lot of yarn from Europe at the moment. I'd never seen it.

00:26:01:08 - 00:26:05:20

Michelle

And I was like, oh, this is nice. I was like, What are you doing with this? And she's like, Get out of it

00:26:07:21 - 00:26:08:19

Charmaine

That's amazing.

00:26:08:19 - 00:26:18:00

Michelle

It was really a theft. It was a she she had like three or four skeins of this beautiful purple, like enough for a top. And I was like, Why is this nestled in here?

00:26:18:00 - 00:26:18:20

Charmaine

This is your mom?

00:26:18:22 - 00:26:21:15

Michelle

Yeah. Oh, my mom is a yarn hoarder. Like.

00:26:22:12 - 00:26:49:22

Charmaine

So this is this is a yarn nowl made of leather from birdie parker designs. But again, they're based in the States. So and yes, there are some jewelry that's beautiful. Yeah. Just a sort of simple like but she did like, like stockings stitch on metal. But she also does it with crochet in as well which obviously I wouldn't get because I'm not a fan of crochet.

00:26:50:16 - 00:27:01:15

Michelle

So I I know there's people listening and they're thinking, oh, don't mention the C-word to Michelle. (Charmaine) Don't mention the C word, I'm working on it.m I'm working on it. That's a lie I'm not working on it.

00:27:01:16 - 00:27:02:00

Michelle

lie

00:27:02:22 - 00:27:09:17

Michelle

I want to, but I just don't. For anyone listening who's offended. Oh my goodness me. Are they shawl pins.

00:27:10:02 - 00:27:11:10

Charmaine

No they're earrings

00:27:12:12 - 00:27:24:00

Michelle

Oh my goodness. You guys are missing out. So don't worry. I'm going to post link to those. Those are beautiful. And for my US listeners, I do have U.S. listeners. They're going to be very spoiled.

00:27:25:13 - 00:27:31:08

Charmaine

There's a clutch a leather clutch with like, yeah, just a knitting design on the front

00:27:31:08 - 00:27:43:11

Michelle

And that's that's the thing is that there's just so many people doing so many beautiful things as well. I just I love that. I love that. Like, you just and I like the way that things spread as well. Like, so now I know what that now I need all those things.

00:27:44:07 - 00:28:07:20

Charmaine

Yeah. I'm actually planning on starting, I'm going to be making hand spun jewelry. Oh, yeah. I've actually started, I've made a few necklaces of, like, made through, like, chunky art yarn. I'm not allowed to formally announce it yet, but I might be able to once the podcast is out, I'm going to be exhibiting at Yarningham, which is really nice.

00:28:08:01 - 00:28:12:24

Michelle

I have to admit I know that, so I'm very excited because I'm going to see you on the Sunday, I booked my tickets

00:28:13:06 - 00:28:13:23

Charmaine

Yay!

00:28:14:01 - 00:28:27:15

Charmaine

So I'll be exhibiting and I'll be having I'll have fluff lots and lots and lots of art batts and fiber braids and yarn on and also, yeah, some hand spun jewelry.

00:28:28:00 - 00:28:42:15

Michelle

So amazing. I'm so excited. Actually, I'm really looking forward to Yarningham. Yarningham is a a great show. To be the first one I go to as like, I haven't been a visitor for a while, so yeah, so good. You will have some of the camel silk with you?

00:28:43:09 - 00:29:01:05

Charmaine

Yeah. I am going to be taking some camel silk. There will be the probably one skein wonders. It may be the odd pair, I don't tend to dye up huge lots of one color in that because people rarely going to want sweater quantities of that amount. But you never know.

00:29:01:14 - 00:29:03:09

Michelle

I'll fight people for it anyway. How much

00:29:03:22 - 00:29:04:14

Michelle

ever of it you have

00:29:06:00 - 00:29:08:18

Michelle

That's a warning to you if you're going to Yarningham, buy it early

00:29:10:16 - 00:29:11:24

Charmaine

Before Michelle comes and nabs it all

00:29:12:16 - 00:29:19:00

Michelle

Very Excited, it's good. I'm really looking forward to it and I'm so pleased you're exhibiting say you must be. is it your first yarn show

00:29:19:00 - 00:29:41:05

Charmaine

So it's my first yarn show and they approached me which was really nice because because of my anxiety disorder I do I do tend to struggle with them applying for things and putting taking that first leap so it was really nice to have that opportunity and yeah I'm really excited I'm really excited.

00:29:41:09 - 00:29:54:14

Michelle

Yes, Sara and Helen are lovely like the rest of the team are Yarningham are awesome. So yeah, that's so exciting. This is like your first show. I'm definitely going, I've my tickets booked and my, my driver booked as well. He's going to be parking car park. My mother in law's coming

00:29:54:24 - 00:29:55:14

Michelle

Very exciting.

00:29:56:06 - 00:29:56:17

Charmaine

Amazing

00:29:57:18 - 00:30:03:12

Michelle

So now, my dear, last question, a non you get one non knitting luxury item to go to the island with.

00:30:04:22 - 00:30:25:10

Charmaine

So I thought about this very hard because I was like, right, well do I bring, do I bring my paints? But then as I would paints run out don't they. site, how long do I get? Like it's not like I can just get on. I get back online with my no internet on a desert island and order more paints.

00:30:26:08 - 00:30:47:11

Charmaine

And I was like, well, do I bring like my headphones? Because desert islands might have really squawky screechy birds or like monkeys that stop me sleeping at night and noise canceling headphones but they'll will run out of power. I'm assuming I won't have worked out how to build a dynamo or something to power my existence.

00:30:47:11 - 00:30:48:10

Charmaine

On this island

00:30:49:20 - 00:31:07:22

Michelle

You're not, so funny, when I said this on a knit and natter, everybody was like, So these I need some logistical details. I was like, I was like, I need to go back and listen to Desert Island Discs because I need to find out how many times they have asked about the logistics of it when I was like, knitters always love logistics, though.

00:31:08:05 - 00:31:08:12

Charmaine

Yeah man,

00:31:09:01 - 00:31:19:11

Charmaine

There was no point me bringing like me bringing like my like headphones and I'm finding out I can't charge them anywhere. And it's just like, no, wh, I wasted it!

00:31:19:11 - 00:31:31:23

Michelle

I'm going to have to put this into the notes, like, right, I'm going to have to think about some parameters that sit outside the six questions like, do you get power? Is there a restocking?

00:31:32:11 - 00:31:32:22

Charmaine

Yeah.

00:31:33:13 - 00:31:34:01

Michelle

I do.

00:31:34:02 - 00:31:54:19

Charmaine

I have is yeah, is there a boat that comes past and we'll just lob more paint and canvases at me every so often? Or do I become really industrious and do I make my own paints? Am I going to be there crushing up beetles and all that nonsense because I've got loads of time on my hands. And then I thought, Oh, no, it has to be, then

00:31:54:19 - 00:31:58:05

Charmaine

I was like, It has to be my spinning wheel.

00:31:58:18 - 00:31:59:08

Michelle

Perfect, I love that.

00:31:59:23 - 00:32:13:17

Charmaine

But then I was like is that too close to yarn? I mean, it's just basically as an extension of knitting, isn't it? Then I was hoping I will maybe can I just include that in my knitting stuff? But I was like no, Michelle and I think Michelle would allow

00:32:13:17 - 00:32:13:22

Speaker 3

that.

00:32:14:22 - 00:32:19:13

Charmaine

Spinning wheels quite a large, it's a large extension of knitting.

00:32:20:01 - 00:32:27:10

Michelle

I like I live in this world where I'm just like, oh whatever goes it's fine, then everybody's like, I need some more details about this island.

00:32:29:08 - 00:32:30:06

Charmaine

I am a fan of,

00:32:30:06 - 00:32:33:05

Charmaine

I'm a fan of rules and understanding the rules.

00:32:34:01 - 00:32:53:01

Michelle

So I I, I love, I love that. Like, I'm actually going to have to go away and think more about this because you're not. It's I think that's kind of I think I go through life as quite I think not not quite shallow. Just kind of like a dilettante. I think that's the word I want kind of I know a little bit about things, but I don't worry too much about stuff.

00:32:53:12 - 00:32:59:08

Michelle

But I'm now going to have to go and see, like, am I going to give you some chickens? Are you going to have some starter things

00:32:59:20 - 00:33:00:06

Charmaine

Am I going

00:33:00:06 - 00:33:03:23

Charmaine

To have a goat? Am I going to have a little goat, that I can milk and then I can spin her fluff

00:33:04:23 - 00:33:10:17

Michelle

Like there's going to have to be isn't there? There is going to have to be some kind of menagerie of the island to provide.

00:33:11:20 - 00:33:35:05

Charmaine

Like spinning would be amazing beecause you know, you get the coconut husks and whatever. And then I can spin up spin up my rope I was just thinking as a tool for survival, my spinning wheel, you know, so I'm dressed. Yes. And I can weave some I can't weave yet, but I shall land on with my plenty of time on the island and.

00:33:36:12 - 00:33:37:06

Charmaine

so

00:33:38:01 - 00:33:43:03

Charmaine

so, yeah, I always think I think it would have to it have to be my spinning wheel.

00:33:44:11 - 00:33:53:10

Michelle

OK, I'll arrange I will arrange food, restocking and power so that at least, you know, and some herd animals for company.

00:33:54:05 - 00:33:55:16

Charmaine

I didn't even consider food, I don't know, I would just starve

00:33:55:16 - 00:34:00:10

Michelle

Well, you have coconuts decided already

00:34:00:13 - 00:34:00:18

Charmaine

Yeah, decide on the coconuts

00:34:01:08 - 00:34:07:24

Michelle

It's not Bear Grylls Island that I'm sending you to, I'm not dumping you a mile outside the island so you've to swim in

00:34:09:20 - 00:34:11:11

Charmaine

OK? I just assumed.

00:34:11:17 - 00:34:13:22

Michelle

Oh, no, no, no way. No, it's not.

00:34:14:09 - 00:34:28:14

Charmaine

My waterproof raft waterproof bag on my raft with all my knitting because that was the other thing. I thought, well, how am I getting this knitting stuff there? Because how am I going to swim to this island and make sure my yarn doesn't get wet like this? This is how much I thought about it.

00:34:29:08 - 00:34:38:10

Michelle

So many other people have asked it. People, and I. I have not thought this through this is actually, this is the story of my life. I have not thought this through.

00:34:39:15 - 00:34:39:20

Michelle

Oh.

00:34:40:17 - 00:34:55:05

Michelle

No, that's really funny. So, my dear, thank you ever so much for those. I have a few more. Just a few things. Is there anything? So I'll obviously post links to you on Instagram. And to your shop. Is there anything else apart from your exhibiting at Yarningham that you would like to share with everybody?

00:34:56:01 - 00:35:05:02

Charmaine

I don't think so. Work is very quiet. At the moment. I am a cabaret performer

00:35:05:02 - 00:35:05:18

Michelle

You're a beautiful singer, Oh, my goodness.

00:35:05:18 - 00:35:13:11

Charmaine

Oh, thank you. Yes. People want to now. I'll let you. I'll let you come in. I'll let you say stuff.

00:35:13:11 - 00:35:28:14

Michelle

So I was just so in I honestly, when I saw your Instagram and I was like, oh, it just it was amazing. You just oh, I was like, that is so amazing. Yeah. So everyone should just follow you for like your art and your yarns and like your voice.

00:35:30:22 - 00:35:57:17

Charmaine

That's very kind. No, I don't think so. I mean, there's like new stuff up on the up on the shop fairly regularly, but also if people like stuff and they want it or they have oh, that was it. Bespoke yarns like that is like that was like the main reason I got into dyeing because I absolutely loved recreating ideas and thoughts in colors and on textures.

00:35:57:17 - 00:36:24:02

Charmaine

So like I'm a couple of people have done this already, but they, they send me a song and they go can you create this feeling or this song in yarn or a memory and a friend of a friend wanted some yarn for a friend of hers. And it was for, I think, I think it was a 40th birthday present and she said, said this is our karaoke song that we do.

00:36:24:03 - 00:36:42:06

Charmaine

And so she sent me the karaoke song and she sent me photos of the friend on her wedding day and like and the wedding dress, which was like fuschia and gold. And she was like these cut and other photos of her friend and the clothes colors she wears. And she's like, This is my friend, this is our karaoke song.

00:36:42:06 - 00:37:11:22

Charmaine

Can you do me a yarn that encapsulates this vibe about my friend? And it was like, yes. So that is my favorite thing to do. So if anyone out there wants some bespoke yarns and bespoke bases as well, say like, no, not that I not that I necessarily spin up the base, but I could say like I, I also, depending on what the person wants, I will also select a base that I think will suit that vibe as well.

00:37:12:13 - 00:37:46:19

Charmaine

So yeah, if somebody wants like a crisp autumn morning and then it will be on blue faced Leicester you know, whereas if somebody wants like ah dreamy rainbows, it will be on like merino aran or something, you know, something squishy. And then the one she had for her friend, it was like a really special 40th birthday thing. So we did the camel silk and it had that glow and that shine and that sort of like star vibe.

00:37:47:09 - 00:38:02:02

Charmaine

And so that is and I would love to do more of those. I love, I love creating stuff to try and translate people's thoughts, dreams and memories into yarn. That's my favourite thing to do.

00:38:02:10 - 00:38:11:23

Michelle

Oh, I've just written down, I was like, I have a video of our wedding and I was like, I need to send you that for like any yarn at all. I must do

00:38:11:23 - 00:38:12:08

Michelle

that today.

00:38:13:22 - 00:38:16:23

Michelle

So thank you ever so much, my dear.

00:38:16:23 - 00:38:17:07

Charmaine

Thank you so much for having me

00:38:17:10 - 00:38:40:04

Michelle
